The Hermann Knothe Prize - Science Prize of Upper Lusatia has been awarded by the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences since 2006 and has been awarded since 2007. The prize was named after Hermann Knothe (1821–1903), a regional historian of Upper Lusatia , who published a large number of writings on the history of Upper Lusatia.

The foundation of the award was initiated by the historian Matthias Herrmann .

The prize is endowed with 700 euros and is shared in equal parts by the cities of the historic six-city association of Upper Lusatia, Bautzen , Görlitz , Kamenz , Löbau , Zittau and Lauban / Lubań , as well as the now Polish city of Zgorzelec . This award recognizes outstanding achievements in researching Upper Lusatian culture and history. Young academics, especially students, Magister Artium (MA) and doctoral candidates, are invited to submit papers on a topic from Upper Lusatia. The works can address historical as well as art and cultural-historical issues, e.g. from the areas of the environment, cultural landscape, technology, economy, society, family, demography, everyday life, material culture or politics.

Every year the Oberlausitzische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften e. V. publicly advertises a topic on which scientific papers can be submitted. The theses to be submitted should "bring together and support regional scientific research in Upper Lusatia in all areas with their cultural reference fields, the history of science and intellectual movements" . The mayors of the six cities will be informed about the process of the tender and the decision of the award committee. At the same time, they will be invited to the award ceremony in Görlitz, which is linked to the Society's annual spring meeting in April.

An award committee selects the one whose author will be chosen as the award winner in the following year from among the award-winning fonts. The prize can also be divided after the jury's decision. The award ceremony takes place by the President of the Society at the spring conference, at which the award winner gives a lecture on his work.

Acceptance of the award obliges the author to first publish the work or to summarize it in the New Lusatian Magazine NF .
