Portrait of Knothes with autograph

Hermann Friedrich Knothe (born October 9, 1821 in Hirschfelde , † February 8, 1903 in Dresden ) was a German historian. He was the most important and productive regional historian of Upper Lusatia and researched the history of Upper Lusatia for around 60 years; He published his results in around 145 individual papers, including half a dozen larger monographs.

Life

Hermann Knothe came from a pastor's family; his father Karl Friedrich Knothe (1793–1855) had become a deacon in Hirschfelde in 1820. He attended the Zittau grammar school from 1832 to 1840 and then studied theology in Leipzig until 1843 at the request of his father . He was a sub-senior at the Lausitzer Preacher Society and remained an honorary member. He then worked as a private tutor in Dresden until he was appointed to the Zittau grammar school in 1855. In 1851 he published his first historical work on the history of his hometown Hirschfelde.

In 1861 he was appointed professor at the royal cadet corps in Dresden. This gave him access to important libraries and the Saxon State Archives , which significantly boosted his historical research. For decades Knothe was the most important author of the New Lusatian Magazine (NLM). The Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences made him an honorary member in 1887. In 1897 he was appointed a member of the Royal Saxon Historical Commission. In his historical work, Knothe dealt almost exclusively with the history of Upper Lusatia from the Middle Ages to the Peace of Prague of 1635 . The focus of research was legal and constitutional history as well as the history of the nobility. Knothes work is impressive because of the abundance of sources he used, which has not been reached in this way in Upper Lusatia until today. Knothe died in Dresden in 1903 and was buried in the Old Annenfriedhof .

In honor of Hermann Knothe, the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences has awarded the Hermann Knothe Prize for academic achievements in the field of research on Upper Lusatian topics since 2007.
