Hermann Richard Otto Knothe (born March 13, 1891 in Leipzig ; † May 12, 1961 in Bad Elster ) was a German landscape and portrait painter .

Life

Hermann Knothe was a trained lithographer (trained 1906–1909). Until his military service he worked as a draftsman at the Leipzig art publisher Eckert & Pflug . At the same time he studied painting, graphics and sculpture at the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Trade in Leipzig. In 1914 he was drafted to serve in the First World War. He served as a grenadier in the Royal Saxon Leibgrenadierregiment No. 100 in Dresden . In September 1914, Knothe was seriously wounded in the campaign off Paris by shot in the head, shot in the back and hand. The injury resulted in his left eye going blind and hearing loss. As a soldier, he was then taken prisoner by the French, which he spent on the island of Belle-Île-en-Mer . He was released from captivity through exchange and went to relatives in the Baltic region. In 1915 he came to Bad Elster for convalescence, where he began to paint the landscapes of the Vogtland and portraits of its residents. From 1918 he could be found again and again in Bad Elster; initially only as a summer guest who lived in Leipzig in winter, and finally from 1937 as a permanent resident of Bad Elster. He turned down a professorship in Berlin allegedly offered to him in 1948. From 1952 to 1954 he was banned from working.

The painter captured many views of Bad Elster and the surrounding area in his pictures. In the middle of the spa facilities he regularly sat with his easel, surrounded by interested spa guests and brought the idyll of the spa onto canvas. The painter's favorite motifs were, among others, the gondola pond and prominent places in the park along the spa promenade. Not to forget the Vogtland landscapes.

“A painter has set up his easel in front of the colonnades in order to bring one of the delightful magpie motifs onto the canvas. Like a colorful film with 'His Majesty the Spa Patients' in the leading role and the crowd of extras of the day guests, the bathing life passes him by. "

- Hermann Heinz Wille : Bad Elster

The spa was his artistic place of activity from 1937. Knothes studio apartment was in today's Johann-Christoph-Hilf-Straße 1, a memorial plaque was attached to the house, donated by grandson Olaf Meinel in 2003. On behalf of the bathing management, Herman RO Knothe also organized and supervised art exhibitions in the Kurhaus, Badehaus and in the foyer.

In 2011, the 1st art exhibition on the work of the Elsteran artist took place in this same foyer, while further exhibition areas formed the hallways of Bad Elster's town hall. With this permanent exhibition lasting several months, the city also honored an advertising medium, as Knothe created a lot of publicity during his lifetime, quasi his studio and the like. a. outsourced to the spa facilities.

In 2005, a state examination thesis on the subject: "Hermann Richard Otto Knothe - Painter in Bad Elster" was prepared at the TU Dresden / Institute for Art Education.
