Burkersdorf is a village in the Saxon Upper Lusatia and a district of the city of Zittau in the district of Görlitz near the border with Poland . Until it was incorporated into Schlegel in 1950, Burkersdorf was an independent municipality.
Position and extent
The place is located in the south-eastern part of the district in the valley of the Kemmlitzbach and extends over a length of almost one and a half kilometers. Historically, Burkersdorf is a Waldhufendorf . While on one side of the village street there are mainly former farms, on the other side of the street there are mainly cottages and gardeners' properties . In the east and northeast is the monastery forest , in the southwest the Oberwald . Burkersdorf borders Schlegel in the southeast .
geology
The area around the village is completely covered by a layer of loess clay , which means that the soil has good properties and is very fertile. However, extensive measures to improve the soil were necessary in the western part of Burkersdorf in order to create productive meadows and arable land. For example, the outflow of a large pond had to be expanded to prevent swamping and overgrowth. In 1927 the pond was completely converted into cultivated land .
history
It is believed that Burkersdorf was created in the 14th century by the immigration of Franconian and Swabian settlers. From the beginning, the place was a knight's seat and predominantly agricultural. The village was first mentioned in a document under the name Burkhardsdorff in 1324 when the Johanniterkommende von Hirschfelde had a daughter church built here. The Johanniter had a great influence here until the 16th century . In 1570, however , the Coming sold all the justice and goods to Zittau, this can be seen as the beginning of the beginning Reformation in Burkersdorf.
With the introduction of a subordinate order in the whole of Upper Lusatia in 1651, there was also an increasing number of buyouts in Burkersdorf, where farms could be transferred from one landlord to another against the will of their residents. As a result, the villagers were almost helpless at the hands of the landowners.
The oldest known owners of the manor in Burkersdorf are the members of the von Gersdorff family , before they sold the estate to Ferdinand von Löben in 1690. The most prominent owner of the manor was probably Count Moritz von Sachsen , who received the estate in 1713 through his marriage to von Löben's daughter Johanna Victoria Tugendreich von Löben . Later it came into the possession of General Field Marshal Jacob Heinrich von Flemming and in 1734 it went to Hofrat Thomas August von Fletscher . The manor was inhabited until the end of the Second World War, the last lord of the manor was Joachim von Sandersleben . In May 1945, the associated castle burned down completely.
After the old church became too small for the growing population, the new building was completed in 1846. Burkersdorf and Schlegel have always formed a unified school and church community. Therefore, it was incorporated into Schlegel on July 1, 1950. After its incorporation in Zittau in 2007, the village also belongs to this city.
