The ship designs Ecobox CC 34 and Ecobox CC 42 of the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) are container motor ships . Overall, the series of this type of ship built between 1994 and 1997 by the Flensburg shipyard comprised twelve units, two of which were built at the North Sea Works in Emden .
history
After the takeover of the Flensburg shipyard by the Lübeck shipowner Egon Oldendorff , the FSG developed a joint concept in the early 1990s with five variants of a ship type with load capacities of 25,000, 34,000, 38,000, 42,000 and 48,000 tons. On the basis of a basic design with aerodynamic fore and aft hulls, the client could choose the number of cargo space modules. A subsequent conversion to a longer construction variant was also prepared by the shipyard.
The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a far aft deckhouse and are mainly intended for container transport. The design had a number of independent details. Compared to container ships of the same size of their time, the Ecobox ships each have around 40 percent higher load capacity, tank ceiling area and cargo space and have box-shaped cargo holds , the specialty of which is the lack of hatch coaming . The reinforced upper coaming, which normally forms the upper end of the hatch coaming, is embedded directly in the main deck of the Ecobox type. The task of the missing hatch coaming in the upper chord is taken over by the upper part of the side double hull , which is designed as a service corridor with reinforced side walls ( shear corridor outside and cargo hold wall inside) above the side tanks . In addition, the construction deliberately avoided the extensive use of higher-strength and thus thinner shipbuilding steel, which should make the ships much more durable during their operating time and increase the scrap weight during the subsequent demolition.
The shipyard accepted the construction contracts for the first four CC 42 ships in November 1992 from the Chinese state foreign trade organization, two of which were built by the Emden Nordseewerke. Another four CC 42 orders followed for the Hamburg shipping company Alfred C. Toepfer , who had chartered it out to the American Lykes Lines on a long-term basis . However, Toepfer did not accept the third and fourth construction contracts after the collapse of the American shipping company, they got going for the Bremen shipping company FA Vinnen and the Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company . This was followed by two small CC 34 Ecoboxes for the Chilean shipping company Compañía Chilena de Navegación Interoceánica (CCNI). The last two ships were a CC 42 each for the shipping company F. Laeisz and FA Vinnen.
