Gold Rush in Alaska (original title: Gold Rush , originally Gold Rush Alaska ) is an American - British docu-soap that is broadcast in Germany on DMAX . It is the Discovery Channel's most successful show to date . The series accompanies several teams of gold miners in their daily work.

overview

The docu-soap accompanies several teams of gold miners over several seasons in the mining of soap deposits in the Yukon River area in Canada. The German-language title is a relic from the first season, which played on a claim in Alaska. The series now takes place completely outside of Alaska, the original title has simply been changed to Gold Rush . The series is always recorded in three different companies that work with different technology and different management styles. These include both professional gold miners and newcomers. In addition to the everyday difficulties in gold mining in the permafrost area , the rivalry between the teams is also discussed. The episodes usually show the incidents and events of a week on the various claims and end with the weekly gold weighing. Depending on the occasion, personal events of various mine workers are also shown.

history

The series was initiated by an entry on an online forum. Production company Raw TV was looking for stories for a documentary, whereupon Todd Hoffman got in touch with his plan to start a gold mine in Alaska. The manufacturing company got excited about this idea and followed Todd to Alaska.

Todd Hoffman loses Porcupine Creek, but finds a new claim in the Klondike on Quarz Creek. This season focuses more on gold mining than the previous season, which can be seen from different angles by the three different operations.

Gold Rush: Parker's Jungle Adventure

Episodes: Gold Rush in Alaska / Episode List # Gold Rush: Parker's Jungle Adventure

In the second season, Parker visited the jungles of Guyana with Rick and Karla Ann in 2017. This time the filming was done by longtime Gold Rush in Alaska cameraman Sam Brown.

The trip led to Todd's claim from season 4 and to the Marudi area , where a gold rush is taking place. Parker learned to mine gold using local methods and tries to apply the knowledge he has learned to a claim he leases himself.

The adventure had to be stopped prematurely by the production team for security reasons, as they feared that the cameras would cause a conflict between the locals.

Gold Rush: Parker's New Guinea Adventure

The third season took Parker, along with Karla Ann and Sam Brown, to Papua New Guinea , where some of the largest gold mines on earth are located. Additionally, Parker explored the past of his late grandfather, John Schnabel, who served in the Pacific War. Rick Ness did not participate and was replaced by Special Forces Medic Fred Lewis. The original premiere started on April 5, 2019, and the German-language broadcast began on September 29, 2019.

Gold Rush Dave Turin's lost mines

Gold Rush Dave Turin's lost mines is a spin off in which former Hoffman crew member, Dave Turin, searches for old abandoned mines and tries to manage them again.

people

Current

Parker's beak

Parker is the grandson of John Schnabel, former owner of the Big Nugget Mine. Even as a child he spent a lot of time at his grandfather's mine and was able to gain a lot of experience in prospecting for gold. After a few brief appearances in the first season, Parker stepped onto the series in the second season as it gave him a way to pay some of the bills. Meanwhile he counts some of the cameramen to his best friends and through the income from gold prospecting and the show he is meanwhile a millionaire.

Tony Beets

Tony Beets (The Viking) is a Dutch-Canadian gold prospector. He grew up as the son of a farmer in the Netherlands . After emigrating in 1980, he first worked as a milker and came to the Tamarack Mine in 1986 as a simple employee, which he is now the owner. Beets is married to Minnie and has five children (Bianca * 1987, Kevin * 1988, Michael * 1990, Jasmine * 1992–1993, Monica * 1993). Minnie, Kevin and Monica appear regularly as supporting actors. Since season 4 he has been leasing the Scribner Creek, which he owned, to Parker Schnabel. He is represented as a rough leg with a soft core.

Rick ness

Rick Ness is an American. As a child, he was able to gain experience in handling construction machinery in his family's business. He was a footballer during college but had to quit after injury. He formed a band and met Parker Schnabel during a tour, through whom he eventually became part of the series. He came to the Big Nugget Mine as a freshman in season 3 and followed Parker to the Klondike the following season. After Parker's foreman Gene Cheeseman moved to Tony Beets, he became the new foreman at the company. After the eighth season, he quit his job at Parker and returned in the ninth season with a team of newbies to run their own mine.

Spin-off

Dakota Fred

Dakota Fred Hurt is a North Dakota gold prospector . In the first season, he was put on Todd's team by the landlord as an expert in order to accelerate the gold mining on the claim. Accordingly, he was portrayed negatively this season. In the second season he took over Porcupine Creek and became a protagonist of the series himself. In the following three seasons he worked with his son Dustin the Porcupine Creek and also the Cahoon Creek. He left the series after the fourth season due to a money dispute with the production company. In the meantime, however, he has come to an agreement with the production company and is now a protagonist in the gold rush in the Alaskan spin-off Gold Rush: White Water .

Dustin Hurt

Dustin Hurt is the son of Dakota Fred. Together with his father, he managed Porcupine Creek from seasons 2-4. In Gold Rush: White Water Alaska, he is the driving force behind prospecting in a river.

Dave Turin

Dave Turin (Dozer Dave) is an American from Sandy, Oregon and was an old friend of Todd Hoffman. He holds a degree in civil engineering and spent 25 years in his family business before joining the Hoffman team. With his experience, he was a very valuable support in the team. In the first season he was a guest as an external consultant. When the opportunity arose to get involved in gold mining, he seized the opportunity and became part of the team in the second season. In the third season he already runs his own claim. After the failure in the jungle of Guyana, he left the team, but returned the following season as Todd's business partner.

He left the Hoffman team, and with it the series, for good after a violent physical altercation at the end of the seventh season.

Two years later, however, he returned as the protagonist of a new spin-off series.

Former

Todd Hoffman

Todd Hoffman is a former airport operator based out of Sandy, Oregon . He is the initiator of the series and was accompanied by a camera team for eight seasons. He was portrayed as a dreamer in the series, especially in relation to the American Dream . At the end of the eighth season, he dropped out of the series because the filming put too much strain on his family life. Hoffman wants to dedicate himself to his production company and singing in the future.

Jack Hoffman

Jack Hoffman from Sandy, Oregon is the father of Todd Hoffman. He is a veteran gold prospector who was prospecting in Alaska a quarter of a century before the series began. In doing so, he lost everything. The series is a second chance for him to fulfill his dream.

Freddy Dodge

Freddy Dodge is a professional gold prospector and has ties to a Colorado mining equipment manufacturer. He built at least 3 washes for the Hoffman team. In seasons 1 and 2 he was seen as an external expert. In seasons 3–8 he was - with interruptions - an integral part of the Hoffman team. In season 7, he even became a partner. After the Hoffman team left, he no longer played a major role, but had several guest appearances as an external consultant on Rick Ness' team.

John Schnabel

John Schnabel (1920–2016) was Parker Schnabel's grandfather and mentor. He was originally from Kansas. Over the course of his life he has worked in many different fields. Among other things, he worked in a sawmill, served in World War II and was mayor of Haines . It was not until his mid-sixties that he founded the Big Nugget Mine and then ran it for 25 years.

production

The series is produced on several different claims and requires close cooperation between the companies and the various camera teams on site, which is only visible to the viewer in rare cases. It is currently being produced in cooperation with Tamarack Inc (Tony Beets) and two companies not known by name (Parker Schnabel and Rick Ness). Former operations are the Jerusalem Mining / 316 Mining (Todd Hoffman) and the Jim Nail Placer Mine (Dakota Fred).

Both the workers and the camera team live on the claim during the production of a season and also spend a lot of time together away from the camera. There are many difficulties associated with production. The internet connection required for communication with the headquarters in London could only be guaranteed via satellite, at least in the first season, powered by a generator in the mine.

It was a great challenge to ensure safety between the construction machines and the wilderness of North America. To protect against bears, each member was equipped with pepper spray and a signal horn, and there was also their own armed security staff on site. In addition, all team members wear safety vests. It was also a challenge to have enough material in stock for production. The long supply routes that are occasionally themed in the series also affect the camera team. A seven-day work week was not uncommon during production. This was particularly difficult in the White Water spin-off, as the claim is not only remote, but also very difficult to access and can only be reached by helicopter or an improvised cable car.

The producers coordinate with the mine operators to ensure smooth production and often consult each other in order to be able to plan accordingly. In the daily mine operation, however, the camera team tries not to stand in the way of the mine work and only to observe silently. However, this is not always possible as the cameramen sometimes approach the construction vehicles very closely in order to take good pictures, which requires the driver to be more careful. It even happened that a cameraman was so deep in the mud that he had to be dug up with an excavator. Such scenes don't make it into the final form of the series, but rather into the making-offs. The cooperation between the mine operators and the camera team is only shown openly in emergencies. As in the first season z. B. Todd's daughter had a seizure and was hospitalized, the production team called an ambulance through their communications line. In the fourth season, a team member had a motorcycle accident, and there, too, it was the production team who helped organize transportation to the nearest hospital.

The conveyor vehicles are all equipped with cameras. The mini cameras and the cameramen can be seen openly in the series, but are not addressed. Two film crews are on duty on each claim, an early shift and a late shift, which results in a total of 6 film crews. Only a small part of all recordings is used for the final series. For the third season, for example, 2,623 hours were filmed. That's the equivalent of 184 hours for every hour on TV.

The series is not scripted. However, certain scenes are sometimes re-shot under direction if this is necessary to tell a coherent story. In addition, when editing the series, specific scenes are selected in order to portray certain characters positively or negatively. If a character is supposed to be good, the negative scenes just don't get included in the final version of an episode. If a character is supposed to be evil the other way around. You can see this particularly well in Fred Hurt, who was pushed onto the Hoffmans as an expert in the first season and was therefore portrayed rather negatively, while he was portrayed positively as the protagonist in the second season. The portrayal in the series even went so far that after the second season he was referred to as a land thief on social media, although he had legally acquired Porcupine Creek. According to a member of the production team, this took him very seriously. Tony Beets is also an example, as he takes on the role of a (positive) protagonist and, as the lessor of Parker Schnabel, that of a (negative) antagonist.

The production of a season takes about half a year. The first episode of a season is usually broadcast in the last week of mining in the Klondike, in which the last episode is filmed. But it can also go much faster, such as B. the special episode In memory of John Schnabel shows. This had its world premiere just two weeks after the death of John Schnabel. The German premiere followed a month later.

It is not known how much money a company receives per episode. However, the series is not only a lucrative extra income, but also brings problems. For example, Tony Beets was fined $ 31,000 in 2015 because the fire baptism of his dredge in season six violated the environmental regulations of the Yukon Territory. The whole incident only became known through the broadcast of the television series.

reception

Officials in Alaska fear that because of the show and the alleged successes of the prospectors, a new "gold rush" could set in due to the economic situation in the USA in Alaska. Those responsible for the Discovery Channel confirm that apart from the camera, someone from the official side is monitoring the activities of the Hoffmans and, with a few exceptions, they have so far complied with all the requirements and regulations of the state of Alaska.

Jimmy Dorsey, a former member of the Hoffman team, claimed in an interview that the series is scripted, making it a pseudo-documentary . Todd Hoffman said in a statement that Dorsey's claims are false. James Harness also called the series a pseudo-documentary and confirmed that it was partially scripted. In an interview with oregongold.net he said that the episodes were very different from what he heard the events in reality. ("It truly is not the way I remember it, and it distorts my memories ... I get mad, because it's different from what I remember.")

Dakota Fred emphasized in an interview that the series "unfortunately" was very, very real.

Companies active in the mining sector use the awareness of the series for advertising. The mechanical engineering company Volvo, for example, once invited some actors to one of its presentations at a construction machinery fair in Las Vegas.

Since the second season there have been many fans visiting the Claims in North America. This also includes tourists from Germany.

Charisma

The series is produced for the American Discovery Channel . The broadcast in Germany takes place solely on the channel DMAX , on which the series has had a regular seat on Sunday evening for several years. In Austria the series runs on the DMAX offshoot DMAX Austria.

computer game

On October 13, 2017 appeared on online gaming platform Steam with Gold Rush: The Game code Horizon a simulation of the series for Microsoft Windows .
