history

The hall was built in 1954 by the Gossau rubber band factory "Goldzack". The hall was planned by the St. Gallen architects Heinrich Danzeisen and Hans Voser together with the Basel engineer Heinz Hossdorf. In the 1970s, the Goldzack company gave up. In 1987 the Gossau textile company "Josef Breitenmoser AG" bought the hall. Tempo paper handkerchiefs were first produced in the hall. It later served as a sales hall. In 2015 Josef Breitenmoser AG (Bremo for short) also gave up its business operations. The hall was then empty. The hall has been used by update Fitness AG as a fitness studio since September 12, 2016.

architecture

The Goldzack Hall has a usable area of 1400 m² and has no pillars. It is considered a masterpiece of post-war architecture in Switzerland. It is a circular cylinder shed construction. The hall consists of six concrete shells between 7 and 12 centimeters thick. A corrugated iron roof was installed on the concrete shells. The shells were created one after the other in 1964 using the shotcrete method, which attracted international attention. Photos and plans were exhibited as part of the “Twentieth Century Engineering” exhibition at the New York Museum of Modern Art .
