Road 22 and Golestan National Park

The Golestan National Park ( Persian جنگل گلستان) is the oldest national park in Iran.

It is located in the northeast of the country in the province of Golestan and was founded in 1976 on the basis of the two already existing protected areas Almeh and Yashki . It covers an area of 91,890 hectares. The park is located in the transition area between the eastern foothills of the Elburs Mountains and the western foothills of the Khorasan - Kopet Dag . It covers altitudes from 1000 to 1400 m above sea level and is known for its temperate rainforests, but also includes open habitats such as grass steppes, bush areas and rocky regions. The extremely diverse landscape zones require a rich fauna. In the park are leopard ( Panthera pardus ), wolves ( Canis lupus ), wild boar ( Sus scrofa ), Maralhirsche ( Cervus elaphus maral ), deer ( Capreolus capreolus ), Steppe wild sheep ( Ovis orientalis Arkal ), wild goats ( Capra aegagrus ) and gazelle ( Gazella subgutturosa ).

The park is threatened by poaching and almost everywhere is surrounded by cultivated, deforested land. Another problem is the Asian Highway leading through the national park , which led to considerations about restructuring the road network in the national park, but this has not yet been implemented. Cutting through the park leads to the disruption of the ecological balance. The Golestan National Park is not only of ecological but also of touristic and cultural importance, and efforts are being made to include this park on the World Heritage List . The park is already on the UNESCO tentative list .
