The Asian highways project ( English Asian Highway Project (AH)) is a cooperative project between the 32 Asian countries and the United Nations ( ESCAP ), to expand the Asian highway network.

General

The Asian highways project is one of the three pillars of the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development (ALTID) -project ( Project for the Asian overland transport infrastructure ) which ESCAP Commission was signed during its 48th session in 1992 from the.

The three pillars are:

history

The AH project was launched in 1959 by the United Nations with the aim of promoting the development of the international road transport network in Asia. Considerable progress was made in the first phase of the project from 1960 to 1970. However, when funding was stopped in 1975, development slowed.

ESCAP carried out various projects with the AH members after ALTID was signed in 1992.

The Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network (IGA) was approved at the Intergovernmental Meeting on November 18, 2003 . The IGA includes Appendix I, which names 55 different AH routes with a total length of approx. 140,000 km within the 32 member states, as well as Appendix II, the Catalog Classification and Design Standards . During the 60th meeting of the ESCAP in Shanghai ( People's Republic of China ) in April 2004, the IGA Treaty was signed by 23 states.

A route from Tokyo to Istanbul was suggested for the route of the AH 1 . This would lead through North Korea as well as South Korea , China and other countries in the south-west and south of Asia as well as Central Asia. The route is intended to intensify trade relations between the East Asian countries (especially India and China).

In order to expand the route, existing roads are to be expanded and new sections of the route are to be built.

In the meantime, US $ 26 billion has been invested in improving existing road sections. As before, however, 18 billion US dollars are missing to finance the project.

Signage

In the project documents, a uniform designation for the highways is proposed - they start with the letters "AH" (for "Asian Highway") followed by one, two or three digits. The letters and numbers use Western characters with the Latin alphabet and Arabic numbers . Similar to the labeling of European roads , the designations can also be integrated into existing signs. Highways with one digit cross Asia in full size, while the roads with three digits are limited to regional connections (except for AH123) - highways with two digits are longer regional highways, some of which also cross national borders.

A uniform design of the signs was not specified, the writing should be kept in white or black, but the color, shape and size of the sign are completely free. Most examples show a rectangular blue sign with white letters ( similar to German Autobahn signage), other examples show white on green and black on a white rectangular sign.
