Pol-e Chomri (or Puli Khumri , Pashto / Dari :پل خمری) is a city in northern Afghanistan .
It is the capital of Baglan Province . The 1979 census showed a population of 31,101. According to official estimates, it had a population of 123,700 in 2020. This makes it the seventh largest city in Afghanistan.
Pol-e Chomri is located in an agriculturally useful floodplain. In the city there is a cement factory built with Soviet help. About 12 km to the north is the Surkh Kotal archaeological site .
In Puli Khumri was from October 2006 to March 2013, a Provincial Reconstruction Team of ISAF , under the direction of Hungarian armed forces .
Combat troops of battalion strength (around 600 men) of the Bundeswehr had been stationed at the Observation Post North near the city since the summer of 2010 . From there, the highways from Kabul to Mazar-e Sharif and Kunduz were monitored . Ten soldiers were killed in the process. The withdrawal from the base began in February 2013.
In August 2021, the Taliban took control of the city.
