Keng Tung or Kengtung ( Burmese ကျိုင်းတုံမြို့ ; BGN / PCGN : kyaingdônmyo), also known as Cheingtung, Chiang Tung, Kyaingtong and Kengtong, is a city in Shan State in eastern Myanmar .

history

Keng Tung was founded in the late thirteenth century by the grandson of King Mengrai's son , who came from the Chiang Mai dynasty . It was part of the Lan Na kingdom . Because of this, the ethnic composition is slightly different from the rest of Shan State.

During World War II , Keng Tung became a central target of military intervention by the Thai Army , which captured the city on May 27, 1942 and set up their headquarters here. At the end of the war, the troops withdrew from Shan State.

The Palace of Saopha (Princes) of Keng Tung, a colonial-style building was built in 1905 by Kawng Intaleng Kiao, and destroyed by the military regime in 1991.

Geography and climate

The city of Keng Tung is located at the southern end of a valley that is about 19 km long and an average of 11 km wide. There is a city wall with a moat eight kilometers long. In the dry season, many people from the area and numerous caravans from China come to the market in the city. The plain is at an altitude of 910 m above sea level.

The average rainfall is 150 cm per year. The daytime temperatures rise to almost 38 degrees during the hot period. The lowest temperatures around freezing at night.

economy

There are minerals that have hardly been mined so far. Most of the streams are panned for gold. There are teak forests in Mong Pu and Mong Hsat, these are cut through public procurement. A third of the price from selling the logs goes to Mawlamyaing as the government receives royalties. There are teak forests in the Mekong catchment area in the south of the state, but there is only one local market for this wood. It is also rice , sugar cane , EAI th-nuts, tobacco , cotton , poppy and tea grown. In addition, the livestock industry is of great importance. There is a university.
