history

Doğubeyazıt has a long history and was at times more important than the provincial capital Ağrı. In Armenian the place was called Daruynk ' or Taruynk' . The place, about five kilometers south of today's city, was part of the Empire of Urartu from the 7th-8th centuries. Century BC After Urartu the Persians , Romans , Arabs , Armenians and Byzantines ruled here . All of them used the Doğubeyazıt plain as a resting place and stopover before their trains into the mountains. Turks and Mongols ruled here from the 11th century .

Doğubeyazıt Fortress has been rebuilt and expanded several times. In 1374 the Jalairide Şehzade Bayazıt Han also had it rebuilt. The name Bayazıt then passed on to the city, which was then called Bayazıt / Beyazid. In 1514 Bayazıt became part of the Ottoman Empire . One of the Ottoman administrators by the name of İshak Pascha had the Ishak Pascha Palace (Turkish İshak Paşa Sarayı ) built between 1685 and 1784 .

Bayazıt was the scene of the Turkish-Persian War of 1821-1822. On August 28, 1828, the city was captured by Russian troops under the leadership of Prince Alexander Garsewanowitsch Chavtschawadze , but was not surrendered to the Russian Empire after the Peace of Adrianople . In the Crimean War (1853-1856) Beyazıt was on 5./17. May 1854 by the Russian army under the leadership of Baron Karl Karlowitsch Wrangel , in the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–1878 on 17/29. Captured by the Russians under the leadership of General Arsas Artemijewitsch Tergukassow on April 1st , 1877 . On June 25, 1877, however, they were thrown back and were forced to defend themselves. During the siege of Beyazıt, the small Russian garrison had to defend itself against the Ottoman army in the fortress of Beyazıt for 23 days. The Russian garrison (1,650 fighters) withstood the attacks of the Ottomans (12,000 fighters) from June 6th to 28th. June 1877. Many of the soldiers were later awarded the medal "for the heroic defense of Bajaset 1877". After the peace of San Stefano , the city was to be attached to the Russian Empire, but this was denounced by the Berlin Congress . When the Russians withdrew, many Armenian residents of the city fled with them. They later founded the city of Nor Bayazid (now Gawar in Armenia ). In 1930 the city was destroyed after the Ararat uprising and rebuilt 6 km further.
