Eleşkirt ( Kurdish Zêtka , Armenian Ալաշկերտ Alaschkert ) is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Ağrı .

geography

The district is located in the northwest of the province and borders the provinces of Kars and Erzurum . There are several mountains that are up to 3000 m high. The highest mountain is the Köse Dağ with 3433 m in the north of the district. There is also the Mirgemir Mountains with the peaks Tekir and Mizrak.

In addition to the district town (with 31% of the district population), the district consists of three other municipalities ( Belde , small towns ): Tahir (1,531), Yayladüzü (2,081) and Yücekapı (2,604 inh.). There are also 55 villages ( Köy ) with an average population of 317 inhabitants. Two of them have over a thousand inhabitants: Toprakkale (1,399) and Goncalı (1,179 pop .).

etymology

The name Eleşkirt is the Turkish version of the Armenian Alashkert ( Armenian Ալաշկերտ ) and denotes a plain. In the Middle Ages, the city was known as Vaghaschkert ( Armenian Վաղաշկերտ ). This name was used as early as the 4th century BC. Proven. In Kurdish usage the name is Zêtka / Zêtkan .

history

Urartu and antiquity

The city of Eleşkirt has a long history. The Urartians lived here in the Iron Age . The villages of Pirabat and Toprakkale were founded by the Urartians. The Urartian king Menua erected a stele in Yazılıtaş (HChI No. 23), which tells of his victory over Diaueḫe . After the Urartians lost control of this area, the Medes conquered it . The Medes were followed by the Persians , Macedonians , Romans and Byzantines.

middle Ages

In the Middle Ages Eleşkirt was part of several Turkish and Mongolian empires and principalities. Mention should be made of the Saltukids , the Ahlatschahs , the Ilchane , the Timurids , the Aq Qoyunlu , the Qara Qoyunlu , the Safavids and the Ottomans .
