Patnos (from Armenian Բադնոց Patnods for "wood shed") is a district town and one of the eight districts of the Ağrı Province in Turkey. Patnos is located in eastern Anatolia in the south of the province, north of Lake Van and borders the provinces of Bitlis , Van and Muş .

The small town lies on a plain lined with mountains at the intersection of different roads. The northern slopes of the Süphan Dağı lie within the district. The Urartian ruins of Anzavurtepe are in Patnos . The Höyük Girik Tepe or Değirmentepe are also known. The district town houses over half of the district's population.

The district formed in 1936 consists of the district town and another municipality (small town, Belediye ), Dedeli with 3,670 inhabitants. There are also 92 villages ( Köy ) with an average population of 620 inhabitants. 16 villages have more than a thousand inhabitants. Doğansu (5,254), Değirmendüzü (2,799), Kazanbey (2,129) and Yukarıgöçmez (2,040 inh .) Are the largest of these.

Patnos suffers from a high unemployment rate. Many residents work in the big city for more than six months a year. The main source of income was cattle breeding. Arable farming is not practiced because the climatic conditions and the ownership structure do not allow this. The drinking water supply in the district and the district town was still problematic in 2014.

During violent protests against the Islamic State in October 2014, demonstrators broke into the AKP-run town hall and set fire to it.
