The Kopet Dag Mountains (also Kopet Dag , Koppe Dag , Koppeh Dagh , Köpet Dag , Turkmen Köpetdag , Persian کپهداغ Kope-Dāgh , Russian Копетдаг ) is a mountain range on the border between Turkmenistan and Iran .
It is located in northeastern Iran and runs 645 kilometers in a southeastern direction from the Caspian Sea to the Hari Rud . The highest mountain in the range is the 3191 m high Kuh-e Qutschān in Iran.
The mountains are geologically relatively young, which is also evident from the frequent earthquakes . The Turkmen capital Ashgabat , located in the north of the mountains, was almost completely destroyed in a severe earthquake in 1948 . The Turkmenistan TV tower stands on a hilltop of 809 meters in the Kopet Dag Mountains .
