Gomphosis

As Gomphosis ( ancient Greek Gomphosis , impaction ' ) refers to a special kind of false joint , in which bones are wedged together. In addition, the bones are stabilized by connective tissue fibers . The gomphosis therefore belongs - in addition to the suture and the syndesmosis - to the connective tissue bone connections ( Articulationes fibrosae ).

Wedges occur as:

• Anchoring of the teeth in the tooth sockets of the upper and lower jaw via the Sharpey fibers
• Anchoring of the partes tympanica, petrosa et mastoidea ( petrous pyramid ) of the temporal bone in the skull
