Gonzales Coques
Conzales Coques (* 1614 or 1618 in Antwerp ; † April 18, 1684 ibid) was a Flemish portrait and history painter .
Live and act
He received his training from Pieter Breughel the Elder. J. and David Ryckaert d. Ä., The father of David Ryckaert . In 1643 he married the daughter of David Ryckaert the Elder. Ä. In 1640/1641 Coques became a member of the Guild of Luke in Antwerp. Coques was among others in the service of Charles I of England, Frederik Hendrik of Orange and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria.
As the preferred portraitist of the Antwerp bourgeoisie, he mainly painted small-format portraits. The portrayed individuals or groups of people are mostly placed in interiors or gardens. Coques also painted history paintings. The proximity to Anton van Dyck's world of representation and his preference for the small format earned him the nickname “little van Dyck”.
