Google Web Server (GWS) is the name of the web server software that Google uses for its web infrastructure. Google's web server is used exclusively for all Google domains and websites. GWS is based on Linux .

According to a Netcraft study from May 2015, Google's Web Server ranks fourth in the web server usage ranking behind Apache , nginx and Microsoft Internet Information Services with 7.95% of all active domains . The Google web server holds 2.34% of the share of all domains registered worldwide and is also in fourth place there.

Website requests to many Google pages provide “gws” (without version number) in the HTTP header information to indicate the web server software used. Google itself keeps very low on information about GWS. On an information page about its Chicago location, Google wrote the following brief description of GWS:

“The Google Web Server (GWS) team builds and improves the proprietary web-serving infrastructure that powers Google web search and many other Google search properties. GWS is involved in almost every user-visible change to the google.com site […]. We're always looking for gung-ho engineers, ideally with a background in systems and experience working with very large C ++ codebases. "

The current stable version number of GWS is 2.1.
