Gorgyra (mythology)
Gorgyra ( Greek. : Γοργύρα) is in Greek mythology, a nymph ( Naiad ), with the river god Acheron the underworld demon Askalaphos begat.
Askalaphos, who became Pluton's orcharder , later revealed to Pluton the secret of how to keep Persephone imprisoned in Hades by eating the pit of a pomegranate ( Library of Apollodorus , 1,5,3). For this he was transformed into an eagle owl by her mother Demeter .
According to Ovid ( Met. , 5,539), however, Orphne is the mother of Askalaphos, which is why she is often thought of as one and the same nymph.
