The Gottfried Krüger Bridge is a pedestrian bridge over the Pumpergraben on the edge of the Brandenburg Lower Havel in the urban area of Brandenburg an der Havel . In the course of the Heinrich-Heine-Ufer, it spans a small tributary of the Havel that was previously navigable. Because of its strong curvature, it is colloquially called the "abdominal pain bridge".
history
At the beginning of the 1890s, the city of Brandenburg planned a riverside road with a massive bridge over the Pumpergraben. Due to objections from the residents, this construction of the quayside road and a bridge was not started. Only after the First World War was it possible to create a green area with a promenade on the banks of the Niederhavel. Following the old plans, the city had enlarged the area intended for development on the left bank of the Havel by purchasing land. In 1921 the construction of the steel structure of the small bridge began and on January 8, 1922 the inauguration of the pedestrian bridge could be celebrated. The financial resources for the bridge construction were donated by the Kommerzienrat Gottfried Krüger. The bridge was named in his honor. The bridge was given the eye-catching arch because of the necessary passage for ships. At the end of the Pumpergraben there were smaller businesses. These companies mainly used the transport of their goods on the water. Due to the uncomfortable passage of the bridge, which is provided with steps, a level, parallel bypass was built next to the old bridge in 2014.
Trivia
At the end of the small body of water, called the Pumpergraben, there was a must mill . The miller came out of the tavern one day drunk and immediately there was trouble with his wife. The miller left the house in a bad mood and went to the mill to make preparations for the next day. A vinegar barrel slipped from him and fell into the pumper pit. The barrel broke, emptied and a very acidic water mixture was created, so that the bridge doubled over with stomach ache.
