Gottfried von Metzburg

Gottfried von Metzburg (born November 25, 1738 in Graz , † July 9, 1797 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian Jesuit , teacher and librarian .

Life

Gottfried Xaver, Freiherr von Metzburg , came from a family in the Austrian region of Upper Austria who settled in Styria in the middle of the 18th century . He was a son of the Styrian Land Law Secretary Christoph Augustin Freiherrn von Metzburg from his marriage to Maria Katharina von Hitzelberg.

Like his brother Georg Ignaz von Metzburg , he joined the Society of Jesus on October 27, 1754 and worked as a teacher. He was full professor of oratory and ecclesiastical eloquence at the Lyceum in Klagenfurt, the former Jesuit college , and became prefect of studies and librarian there after the Jesuit order was abolished. As such, he made particular contributions to the expansion and re-cataloging of the library. The funds for this, an annual 20 guilders, came from the assets of the repealed Jesuit order.
