Von Metzburg is the name of an extinct baronial family that has produced several well-known members.

history

The family came from Freiburg im Breisgau and originally called themselves butchers. A Johann Georg Metzger died there in 1615. Another Johann Georg, died in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1631, was a regimental councilor. His youngest son Josef Anton lived in Graz around 1697 . His older brother Johann Georg was the kk legation secretary in Constantinople for eleven years and was presented with a gold chain with the portrait of the emperor by Emperor Leopold I (1640–1705). He was married to Elisabeth, daughter of Simon von Remmingen.

His son Johann Georg became city governor and postmaster in Brno in 1663 and was sent from Brno to Vienna in 1683 at the time of the Turkish siege . Emperor Leopold elevated him to the rank of imperial knight with a diploma dated September 8, 1690 and the title of Metzburg . He died in 1698. He was married to Anna von Masy.

His son Karl Josef, imperial postmaster in Brno, was promoted to the status of imperial baron with a diploma on December 24, 1714 in recognition of the services he had acquired in the conclusion of the Rijswijck peace treaty , in the negotiations of which he had participated as a member of Count Kaunitz's delegation . With his diploma on November 27, 1702, he had already obtained the Bohemian country team. His brother Johann Georg received the Bohemian knighthood in 1710.

Karl Josef's son Christof Augustin (* 1704; † March 5, 1757), from his marriage to Cäcilie von Rodl, was the secretary of land law in Graz. Several children came from his marriage to Maria Katharina von Hitzelberg. The eldest son was the well-known Jesuit father Georg Ignaz Freiherr von Metzburg (1735–1798), professor of mathematics at the University of Vienna , who contributed significantly to the cartography of Galicia . The second son Gottfried Freiherr von Metzburg also became a Jesuit and rhetoric professor in Graz. The third son Franz Leopold (1746–1789) died as a diplomat in Jassy . The daughter Barbara Freiin von Metzburg (1740–1786) married the Land Marshal Max Edlen von Paumgartten and was the mother of the Imperial and Royal Generals Max and Johann von Paumgartten and the grandmother of General Franz Xaver von Paumgartten .

From the marriage of Franz Leopold von Metzburg with Marie von Raab came the son Johann Nepomuk Freiherr von Metzburg (1780–1839), district chief in Żółkiew , north of Lemberg . In 1828 he was appointed Vice President of the General Accounting Directorate and left behind six children.

The eldest son Heinrich (October 17, 1808 to October 21, 1860) became an officer and married Ottilie von Colonius. The eldest daughter Emilie (August 22, 1807 to September 24, 1856) became the wife of the Councilor of State Josef Freiherr von Knorr and, after his death in 1839, of Count Ferdinand von Colloredo . The second son Franz (born June 7, 1813) became a diplomat under Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich and died unmarried as a legation counselor in 1859. Josefine, the second daughter (born November 27, 1810 in Lemberg, † July 16, 1838 in Mauer ) married Rudolph von Vivenot . The youngest son Hans (born October 26, 1815) started his civil servant career, became vice-president of the Moravian Lieutenancy and lived in Salzburg after his retirement. He spent the last years of his life at Stiebar Castle near Gresten , where he died on June 28, 1889. His sister Laura (April 1, 1817 to February 25, 1884) also remained unmarried.

Since Heinrich von Metzburg died childless, the family of the barons of Metzburg died out.
