Franz Xaver Freiherr von Paumgartten (born January 8, 1811 in Graz , † November 19, 1866 in Vevey ) was an Austrian general .

Life

He was the son of Lieutenant Field Marshal Johann Freiherr von Paumgartten (1772–1849), a knight of the Maria Theresa Order . Paumgartten was a graduate of the Theresian Military Academy in Vienna, where he embarked on a career as a professional officer. In 1830 he joined the Galician Uhlan Regiment "Ritter von Brudermann" No. 1 as a lieutenant . He then served in infantry regiments No. 45 and No. 21 and in 1846 became major in Imperial Infantry Regiment No. 11, which was garrisoned in the Mainz fortress .

Only two years later, Paumgartten was seconded as lieutenant colonel and commandant to put down the September Revolution of 1848 in Frankfurt. In 1849 he was transferred to northern Italy, where he was colonel in command of the Imperial Infantry Regiment No. 56. Franz Xaver von Paumgartten was vice governor of the Mainz fortress for the Austrian part of the garrison from 1859 to 1864 and has been an honorary citizen of the city of Mainz since 1864 . In the position of Vice Governor, he was replaced by Woldemar von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg as scheduled.
