Johann Baptist von Paumgartten , from 1813 Freiherr von Paumgartten (born July 26, 1772 in Grieshof near Feldbach , Styria , † September 24, 1849 in Prague ) was an Austrian general .

Life

Johann Baptist von Paumgartten, born as the son of Maximilian Sigismund von Paumgartten and Barbara Freiin von Metzburg (1740–1786) - according to other information in 1770 - received his first military training in the Theresian Military Academy of Wiener Neustadt .

Military career

In 1787 he joined the army and became 1788 second lieutenant , in 1801 to captain , 1805 Major transported. In the battle of Ebelsberg near Linz on May 3, 1809 in the course of the fifth of the coalition wars, in which he was seriously wounded, he distinguished himself through decisive action and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order in 1810 . In 1813, according to the statutes of the order, the elevation to the baron class took place .

In the wars of liberation 1813-1815 he fought as a colonel and commander of the Chasteler Infantry Regiment No. 27 in the Italian army and distinguished himself at Krainburg , Caldiero and Tolentino . Because of his excellent behavior with Tolentino he received the Leopold Order .

In 1821 he was promoted to major general in Naples and in 1827 fortress commander of Capua . In the same year he became a brigadier in Mantua , in 1828 we find him in Klagenfurt , and in 1830 again in Italy. In 1834 he commanded Infantry Regiment No. 21 and from 1839 was city and fortress commander of Prague . Here he died at the age of 79. He was married to Therese von Beck.
