The Stefan Zweig Center Salzburg is a project by the City and State of Salzburg and the University of Salzburg for literature, art and science in Edmundsburg .

history

Stefan Zweig lived in Salzburg from 1919 to 1934 . It was here that he wrote his books Sternstunden der Menschheit , the historical-biographical studies of Joseph Fouché , Marie-Antoinette and Erasmus von Rotterdam . In order to put the literary and European legacy of the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig up for discussion, the Salzburg Center was founded in 2008 by Rector Heinrich Schmidinger . The author and literary scholar Klemens Renoldner has been director of this center since 2008.

program

The program of the Stefan Zweig Center includes lectures, discussions, readings and scientific conferences. Research focuses on the Austrian cultural and literary history from 1900 to 1945, questions of science, art and Judaism , but also conferences on contemporary literature and questions of European unification. National and international, artistic and scientific collaborations are brought into being at this location.

An exhibition presents the life and work of the author Stefan Zweig with pictures and documents. His life story is presented in five sections. Occasionally special exhibitions are also shown.

Library

A research library is available for scientific work. It is a reference library, it is not possible to borrow it. Most of the library comes from the British diplomat and Zweig biographer Donald A. Prater , who donated his Zweig collection to the University of Salzburg.

Publications

The Stefan Zweig Center Salzburg publishes a magazine called Zweigheft . Two issues appear every year. Scattered published texts and interviews by Stefan Zweig will be made accessible, individual studies on biographical questions will be published. Austrian writers report on the new reading of Zweig texts. The branch also documents the events at the center. The Würzburger Verlag Königshausen & Neumann publishes the volumes of the series of the Stefan Zweig Center Salzburg in irregular order . They document the most important research results from conferences and lectures. Volume 2 ("I loved France like a second home" - New Studies on Stefan Zweig), published in 2011, contains all the lectures at a Franco-German branch conference in Mulhouse .

The legal entity is the University of Salzburg, which guarantees the financing together with the city and state of Salzburg. The project is supported by the Association of Friends of the Stefan Zweig Center Salzburg .
