Gotthilf Berger (born May 21, 1794 in Posen ; † February 9, 1874 there ) was a Poznan merchant, benefactor and councilor.

Life

The philanthropist Berger became wealthy through the wine and timber trade . He was elected several times to the Poznan City Council and was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1859 to 1870 . He was a member of the Progressive Party and in 1866 joined the National Liberal Party, which had split off from it. In 1861, with a donation of 65,000 thalers, he made it possible to build the new municipal high school , which he founded in 1853 and which has borne his name since 1890. In this high school students were accepted regardless of their nationality or denomination. There were Polish classes and half of the teaching staff belonged to the Polish part of Poznan. The building is now the Poznan University of Technology . Berger owned a classicist apartment building on today's Kolegiacki-Platz, built 1802-1893. Today the building is the seat of the Kolegiacki Hotel. After his death, the Gotthilf Berger Foundation came into being. a. financed the construction of the old people's home in the Wilda district. A street in the Wilda district bears his name.
