Goula (ethnic group)
Goula (also: Gula ) are an ethnic group in the northeast of the Central African Republic .
history
The name means "people of the water". a distinction is made between the "gens de l'eau" (Molo; Goula Mamoun, Mele, Moto Mar, Sara, Mere) and the "gens de la montagne" (people of the mountains - Zura, Koto, Wowo, Mutu). The tribe immigrated to the area of Vakaga , around Lake Mamoun in what is now Central Africa , at the end of the 18th century . They were Islamized in the 1960s.
The people today number around 17,000 people who live in an area of 50,000 km². Its main town is Birao in the Central African Republic .
