Vakaga is a prefecture in the northeast of the Central African Republic with the capital Birao . The prefecture is only sparsely populated, in 2003 a total of 52,255 inhabitants were reported in a census. The only known raw material in the province is diamonds .

Since mid-2006 there has been fighting between rebels and government troops in Vakaga, during which large numbers of the population have been displaced.

The prefecture is located in the north of the country and borders on Chad in the northwest , Sudan in the northeast , Haute-Kotto Prefecture in the southeast and Bamingui-Bangoran Prefecture in the southwest .

All rivers that have their source in the prefecture flow into the Bahr Aouk , which is part of the Shari river system in the Chad basin .

The highest mountain in the province is the 1330 meter high Mont Toussoro in the Bongo massif . In the southeast, about 5900 km² of the province are under nature protection through the André-Félix National Park established in 1960 and its buffer zone, the Yata-Ngaya nature reserve. In the west of the province are the nature reserves Réserve de faune de l'Aouk-Aoukalé and Réserve de faune de l'Ouandjia-Vakaga , which cover a total of 8251 km² and belong to the national park complex Manovo-Gounda Saint Floris .

The flora and fauna is very rich and is determined in the north by the vegetation type of the Eastern Sudan Savannah and in the south by the Northern Congo Forest Savannah .
