Government House

Government House (literally translated government building and popularly called Yarralumla ) is the official residence of the Governor General of Australia , the representative of the British Crown . The building in the Australian capital of Canberra is located in the middle of a 53-hectare park in the Yarralumla district . This is one of the most expensive and exclusive residential areas in the city and is the location of numerous diplomatic missions.

In Government House, the Governor General presides over the meetings of the Federal Executive Council , holds ceremonies, and receives heads of state and ambassadors from other states. When the Australian head of state, Queen Elizabeth II , visits the city, she lives in Government House; this also applies to other heads of state.

From 1901 on Melbourne was the capital of the Australian Confederation and the Governor General resided in the Government House there . When Canberra was chosen as the location of the future capital in 1913, the government bought the "Yarralumla" house built in 1891 by Frederick Campbell. Because of World War I and post-war economic problems, it was not until 1927 that the government moved to Canberra. The governor general stayed in Melbourne until 1930 and only stayed in Yarralumla during the parliamentary sessions. The first to live here permanently was Sir Isaac Isaacs .

The house has been expanded and renovated several times since the 1920s, but the basic structure of the building from 1891 is still visible. The Governor General has a secondary residence in Sydney , Admiralty House .
