Gozwin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gozwin († June 19 and 29, 1180 or 1181) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1166 or 1167 to 1180 or 1181 .

Münsterschwarzach before Gozwin

Gozwin was already the nineteenth abbot to head the Münsterschwarzach monastery. His predecessors were seldom in the monastery in the 9th and 10th centuries: As so-called commendate abbots , they enriched themselves in the convent property, but lived as lay people outside of Schwarzach. This situation only changed at the beginning of the 11th century. After the dispute between the Würzburg bishopric and some East Franconian aristocratic families, Abbot Alapold was appointed by Heinrich I.

Other prelates followed, who came into office through the Würzburg bishops . Gradually, however, the convent of Münsterschwarzach also insisted on an internal abbot election, as was already practiced in other monasteries. The various abbots who came to the abbey from outside also brought important reform impulses: Egbert came from the Gorze monastery, while Dietrich I came from the Hirsau monastery and also established its reforms.

Life

Nothing is known about the abbot's origin or family. He did not appear until he took office in 1166 or 1167. As the successor of Abbot Sigehard , he continued his building projects. In addition, Gozwin began to renovate the monastic cloister , which was completed in 1180. Furthermore, the construction work on the narthex of the church continued.

One of the first official acts of the new abbot, however, is likely to have been the Würzburg diocesan synod , in which Abbot Gozwin took part in 1167. Here, together with other prelates , he testified to a document relating to the Schlüchtern monastery. Abbot Gowzin died according to the Münsterschwarzacher necrology on June 19, while he is entered in the Michelsberg Book of the Dead on June 29. The years of death are mentioned as 1180 or 1181.
