Zethlingen cemetery

The cemetery of Zethlingen is a Lombard cremation cemetery from the late Roman Empire and the early migration period on Mühlenberg near Zethlingen , a district of Kalbe (Milde) in the Altmark district of Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .

About 150 years ago, fire graves were discovered during gravel mining on Mühlenberg near Salzwedel . At least since the 1820s it was known that there is an urn cemetery on the Zethlinger Mühlenberg. Johann Friedrich Danneil was the first to examine the cemetery and carry out excavations. At that time he assumed that it was a Wendish burial ground.

The Zethlinger Mühlenberg cremation cemetery, now dated to the late Roman Empire and the early migration period, has been largely excavated and investigated since then. It is attributed to the Zethlinger group , early Lombards in the Middle Elbe-Saale region. These early Lombards, an Elbe Germanic tribe, demonstrably lived in this region. Presumably around 166 the group emigrated to the Roman Empire .
