Graefrath transformer tower
The Gräfrath transformer tower is a former transformer tower in Solingen - Gräfrath and is registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Solingen. Its address is Garnisonstrasse 26 .
history
Gräfrath was only supplied with electricity in 1901, and the transformer house was commissioned in 1924/25 by the Bergische Elektrizitätswerke .
The tower was owned by the Graefrath Heimatverein for a long time until it was privately owned in the mid-1990s. It was initially used as a storage room and later converted into its current form of use as living space.
Building description
The tower is located below the western wall of the Gräfrath monastery on a green area on Garnisonsstrasse . Following the idea of the homeland security movement at the beginning of the 20th century, the technical building was stylistically designed in such a way that the building blends in harmoniously with the townscape and landscape.
The tower with a base area of 4.5 meters × 6.5 meters has a four meter high substructure, which is surmounted by a six meter high square tower. The tower is covered with a tent roof . The substructure and tower are divided by multiple horizontal cornices.
In the small distance between the monastery wall and the tower, an intermediate building was subsequently built, which also enables access to the residential building. A wet room was also implemented in this intermediate building. The living space of 20.5 square meters extends over the entire floor area of the building. Due to the high height of the building, a sleeping gallery could be added later. In addition, two new window openings were created and the original entrance was provided with a glass door.
