The Grätzelhaus in Göttingen is an important baroque building from the early days of the Georg August University , which is named after its builder and first resident, the textile entrepreneur Johann Heinrich Grätzel .

The largest baroque building in the city of Göttingen is at Goetheallee 8. The building with sixteen axes and the huge central projection belonged to the property of the largest Göttingen textile manufacturer of its time. Johann Heinrich Graetzel (1691–1770), born in Dresden, rose from 1711 to become one of the leading entrepreneurs in Göttingen. In addition to the Grätzelhaus, his house built between 1739 and 1741, he built two other houses on the same street. In 1748, the cloth manufacturer Grätzel was appointed Obercommerzien Commissarius of the Electoral Hanover . In his time he was the largest commercial employer in Göttingen and southern Hanover, and the construction of new houses was in view of the necessary infrastructure of the new university in the Electorate of Hanover from 1735 to the middle of the 18th century by a new building code of December 13th 1735 and with tax preferences or with complete tax exemption for years.

Left and right, the sandstone portal of the Grätzelhaus, which is adorned with coat of arms and located directly west of the Leine Canal, is framed by two mighty columns. On these are statues of Pallas Athene as an allegory of science and of Hermes as an allegory of commerce to the left and right of the pediment triangle.

Parts of the former interior are in the collection of the Municipal Museum . This includes the wallpaper of the former ballroom of the Grätzelhaus. In the 19th century the Hotel National was located in the Grätzelhaus .
