The Grænalón is one of the glacial lakes on the southern edge of Vatnajökull in Iceland . Its area is 18 km 2 . It is located below the mountain Grænafjall .
In contrast to the more well-known glacial lakes such as Jökulsárlón , it is not located on the coast, but in the highlands, at the northwest end of Skeiðarárjökull .
There are also active volcanoes in the vicinity of Grænalón , which repeatedly initiate glacier runs from this lake. Sometimes large blocks of ice from the Grænalón reached the Skeiðarásander plain . A more significant glacier run took place in 1935. It is believed that the total amount of water poured onto the sander was 1.5 km³; H. the glacial lake emptied itself completely. The largest glacier runs measured so far had a volume of approx. 3,000 m³ / s. The water flows mainly east and west of the mountain Lómagnúpur into the rivers Núpsvötn and Súla .
In the vicinity of the lake there are numerous cold and hot springs, which suggests a high-temperature area under the Vatnajökull, which melts the ice and is responsible for the course of the glacier.
When it is replenished, it can reach a depth of up to 200 m, making it the third deepest lake in Iceland.
