Grön eld ( green fire ) is a glass sculpture by Vicke Lindstrand on Järnvägstorget, at the frontof Umeå Central Station in the province of Västerbotten in Sweden . The nine-meter-high glass sculpture was the largest of its kind in the world when it was unveiled in 1970.

history

Sven Wallander, head of HSB ( Hyresgästernas sparkasse - oh byggnadsförening ), commissioned the construction of the sculpture after seeing the glass sculpture Prisma by Vicke Lindstrand in Norrköping . HSB donated the work of art to the Umeå municipality.

Lennart Johansson, who assembled the sculpture in 1970, told the press in December 2013 that he had hidden a picture of Mao Zedong in one of the sculpture's glass flames .

The sculpture

Grön eld consists of three twisted glass columns that end in a point. The glass columns are made by Emmaboda glasverk in Sweden from three thousand nine millimeters thin glass plates. The pieces of glass were glued together with epoxy glue to withstand the climate. The nine-meter-high sculpture weighs 45 tons and stands on a heavy concrete base that is anchored in the ground.
