Grønlands park - Botsparken is a park and is close to the detention center Oslo ( Oslo Fengsel ) (formerly Botsfengselet ) and the police station Greenland in the district of Grønland in Oslo , Norway . The park is 27.5 hectares in size, excluding the 11.6 hectare area of Klosterenga (Klosterenga Park), which is located along the south side of the demarcated wall.

Location and layout

The park borders the Schweigaards gate building to the south , the Klosterenga park and the Oslo State Prison to the east, Åkerbergveien to the north , Grønland Police Headquarters, Grønlandsleiret and Borggata to the west. Furthermore, the park borders on Grønland kirke to the west , otherwise the park is surrounded by dense residential buildings.

Most of the park is in the Grønland district, a narrow strip near the Oslo prison ends in the Galgeberg district . The buildings south of the park and on the north side of Schweigaardsgate clearly belong to Oslo's Gamlebyen district . The park is also part of the Oslo Police Headquarters Grønland with a detention center, which is also a central location for arrests in Oslo and for further transfers to the Oslo State Prison.

In the park there are several large trees within large lawns and meadows and on the outer edges an avenue of lime trees, which was laid out as access to the prison between Grønlandsleiret and the entrance to the prison. The park was enlarged in 2005 in the section of the passage between the prison and the police station on Åkerbergveien. Along the north side of the police headquarters are some large trees and some buildings separate the park. At the interface with Klosterenga Park is a tight group of tall trees that cast shadows over the entire walkway.

The park is managed by the city administration of Gamle Oslo and the state enterprise Statsbygg .

Name and story

The origin of the park name is not entirely clear. The name Botsparken probably originated in connection with the construction of the old Botsfengselet prison , which was popularly known as Bodsen or Botsen and the park was laid out as part of the complex from 1844 to 1851. The landscape gardener Marius Røhne named Grønland Park for the first time in a book in 1948. In a development plan from 2004 for the construction of the new central arrest at Grønlandsleiret 44 of the Oslo police district, Botsparken was officially used as the name for the northern part. The term Grønlandsparken was still in use. Today the park is mostly run under the double name Grønlands park - Botsparken .

The Botsfengselet built by Heinrich Ernst Schirmer was completed in the park area around 1851. In the area of what is now the park in front of the prison on Borggata and on Grønlandsleiret, prisoners used to work behind a wooden fence on their gardens and fields. The avenue in front of the main entrance and the large groups of trees were also planted at this time. The whole area was then delimited from the city. Later on, new residential areas were built around the park from 1870 to the turn of the century.

The area south of the avenue to the main entrance of the park was laid out around 1912. From 1916 to 1917, the municipality further expanded the park in a northerly direction on public areas. At the same time, the park was demarcated from Oslo's Botsfengselet prison by means of a picket fence a few meters in front of the prison wall to keep the public away.

The construction of the police headquarters in 1978 resulted in the northern part of the park being severely trimmed. The construction of the new central arrest at Grønlandsleiret 44 of the Oslo police district , which was built from 2006 to 2007, made another major cut in the park . The new building devoured some areas of the park, so that there is now only a small park in the direction of Åkebergveien .
