The University of Greenland ( Danish : Grønlands Universitet , Grönl .: Kalaallit Nunaata Universitetia , Greenl. Proper name: Ilisimatusarfik ) is the only university in Greenland and is located just outside the capital Nuuk . She is a member of the University of the Arctic . The language of instruction is mostly Danish, but also Greenlandic. Some seminars are also offered in English. In December 2015 the university had around 650 students and 100 employees.

history

It was previously called the Inuit Instituttet ( Inuit Institute) and was given university status in 1989. It is based on the areas of Greenland, Arctic and North Atlantic .

The university has a budget of 14.8 million Danish kroner and is subordinate to the cultural directorate of the Greenland state government . It is economically and legally independent from the universities and the government in Denmark . There are cooperation agreements with universities in Denmark, the other Nordic countries and Canada . Lecturers also come from there.

The university has been the publisher of Årsskrift for grønlandsk kultur- og samfundsforskning (annual publication for Greenlandic cultural and social research) since 1992 , which is published in Danish with summaries in English.

building

Until 2009, the university was housed in the old Moravian Mission from 1738 in Noorliit near Nuuk, which was renovated in 1987. There were also four smaller buildings. The university had a total of 1,000 m² for administration, lecturers' offices and seminar rooms.

In 2009 the university moved to the Ilimmarfik campus , a center for education, research, documentation and communication.

Institutes

There are four institutes:

  • Administration (economics, law, business administration, etc.)
  • Cultural and social history
  • Greenlandic Philology and Media Studies
  • theology

The university library contains 20,000 volumes and 125 journals on the subjects of economics, politics, administration, history, anthropology, archeology, linguistics, literature, media and theology. The inventory can be researched on the Internet.

Conditions for registration

In addition to the Abitur, admission requires full language skills in Danish and Greenlandic as well as advanced knowledge of English. Around 25 to 40 students are accepted each year. Visiting and individual students can also be accepted.

Foreign visiting students must be enrolled at another university and have two years of study experience. However, there are only exceptional classes in English and no extra classes for guest students who also have to be financially independent; However, if they meet the above conditions, they can live in a student residence hall.

Career prospects

Due to the lack of academics with knowledge of Greenlandic and other languages, the demand in the Greenlandic economy is high.

Graduates usually find work in central or municipal administration, as high school teachers, in cultural or economic institutions, etc. The theologians are taken over by the national church.
