Grúa 82 [ ˈgɾu.ä o̞ˈʧe̞nt̪ä i ðo̞s̺ ], Spanish for 'crane 82', is a harbor crane in the Chilean port city of San Antonio . The crane, declared a Monumento Histórico in 1995 , is the oldest in operation in the country.

history

The history of Grúa 82 is closely linked to the history of the port of San Antonio. It was designed in 1911 in Lyon by the A. Pinguely plant and transported to Chile that same year. During the construction work on the port of San Antonio, the first stones were laid on May 5, 1912 by means of the Grúa 82 in the presence of the then President Ramón Barros Luco . The harbor crane was then used to erect the Panul- Mole . In 1945 it was moved to the south of the Paseo Bellamar promenade , where from then on it was used to pull up and put fishing boats in the water. In 1962, Grúa 82 was acquired by the Cooperativa de Pescadores de San Antonio . In 1967 their boiler exploded , and in 1990 it was replaced by a similar one.

In 1995 the Grúa 82 was named the first and so far only national monument in San Antonio by means of the Decreto Exento 465 (monument number: 00638_MH_05601). In 2009 the port crane was renovated by the Empresa Portuaria de San Antonio , a safety railing and a memorial plaque were installed and a lighting system was installed.

The designation Grúa 82 is derived from the inventory number of the crane during construction work on the port between 1912 and 1918.

description

The Grúa 82 was made of steel and powered by a steam-generating coal boiler. With a consumption of 60 kg coal per hour, the Grúa 82 could lift loads of up to 22 t. Chains were originally used to lift the loads, but these were replaced by steel cables for safety reasons. The crane was originally mobile - two of the crane's six wheels could be driven by a motor and the crane could be moved on rails - it is now firmly anchored to the ground.
