San Antonio is a city in the center of Chile, in the Región de Valparaíso , with 91,350 inhabitants (as of 2017).

geography

The port city is about 50 km (as the crow flies) south of Valparaíso directly on the Pacific Ocean . The Maipo River flows into the Pacific nearby .

San Antonio was repeatedly shaken by earthquakes . The city was z. B. on August 16, 1906 in the area of ​​the devastating earthquake of Valparaíso.

history

In 1810, during the Chilean struggle for independence, San Antonio was declared Puerto Mayor (important port). In 1853 it was decided to expand the port further, as the port of Valparaíso was blocked by the Spanish. After Valparaíso was badly destroyed by the Spanish fleet on March 31, 1866, the role of San Antonio became increasingly important.

In 1911 the city received a rail link to Santiago de Chile . From 1910 to 1917, the French Augusto Galtier expanded the port into a major export port.

San Antonio is a very important port for Chile. Large quantities of copper and sulfuric acid from the El Teniente mine are shipped via the port . The port consists of four large terminals.

The city is connected to the inland by excellent road and rail links.

San Antonio is also an important transshipment port for the Argentine city ​​of Mendoza .
