The Grünau pond

The Grünau pond is an artificially created body of water with an area of 7785 m² in the Lainzer Tiergarten nature reserve . It is located in the 13th district of Vienna Hietzing , between the Pulverstampftor and the Nikolaitor.

history

The pond was set up in the 18th century in order to meet the water requirements of the game in the zoo during the summer months. The Grünauer Bach was dammed for this purpose . Repairs and sealing work were necessary due to the porous subsurface. After the pressure of the ice had destroyed the weir of the pond in 1809 and bank breaks and dam breaks required further expensive renovation measures, the necessity of the system was in question. In 1835, however, the banks were paved with paving stones. By selling the ice in winter to butchers and the Hütteldorfer brewery , the costs of bank reinforcement were subsequently amortized .

Between the two world wars , the pond was opened to the public for swimming and punting. However, the offer was only accepted to a limited extent.

Try the pond to cancer - and carp to use, have been successful only to a small extent. After the end of commercial use, the pond was able to develop naturally. After the pond, which was meanwhile heavily silted up, was dredged in 1990, it now offers a diverse habitat for various fish , in particular carp, roach and rudd as well as pike, and amphibians , especially common toads, crabs and waterfowl and even a beaver .

Water quality

The water is eutrophic and has bathing water quality . However, for nature conservation reasons, bathing is prohibited.
