Konrad Grünemberg's coat of arms

Conrad Grünenberg (also Konrad Grünemberg; † 1494) was an important citizen and knight from Constance .

Life

Exact dates of his life are not known, except for his death in 1494. His father, who was also called Konrad Grünenberg, was a wealthy member of the guild, sat on the city council from 1454 to 1462 and became mayor several times . In 1441, Konrad Grünenberg (probably his father) is mentioned as a "master builder" (supervisor of urban construction work). For the first time in 1474 the younger Konrad Grünenberg is clearly proven as the owner of a municipal office (namely as a mint master).

Grünenberg junior devoted himself to heraldry and wrote his book of arms named after him . In 1465, Emperor Friedrich III supported. him and his brother Hans leaving the guild and changing to the “Zur Katz” society; In this context, Friedrich mentions that Konrad Grünenberg had served him for a long time. For the first time in 1485 Konrad Grünenbert was named "Knight" in a tax list. From April 22, 1486 he was on a 22-week pilgrimage to Palestine and was knighted by the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

In a manuscript of his book of arms and in his travelogue, the Grünenberg coat of arms is shown with different additional characters, including: a. the Jerusalem cross, the half wheel of St. Catherine, the badge of the jug order , that of the sword order of Famagusta and an order of George, which was partly identified with the Habsburg order of St. George .
