from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Goldfriedrich (* July 21, 1870 in Bautzen , †  December 21, 1945 in Leipzig ; full name: Johann Adolf Goldfriedrich ) was librarian at the Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhandels in Leipzig and lecturer at the institute for cultural and universal history there .

biography

Goldfriedrich studied German, history and philosophy in Leipzig and received his doctorate there in 1895. From 1896 to 1903 Goldfriedrich worked as a secondary school teacher in Leipzig before he did his military service and then taught at the Institute for Cultural and Universal History at the University of Leipzig from the summer semester of 1909 . He was close friends with its director Karl Lamprecht and was also married to his niece. In 1912 he became head of the archive and library of the Börsenverein.

As an author, Goldfriedrich made an important contribution to book market research with his “Statistical Survey of Books and Magazines Published in the Territory of the German Book Trade in 1908”. In it he analyzed the book publications according to their format, the features (with or without supplements), the size and price, as well as according to individual countries and cities. The work that was not continued for the following or previous years can serve as a snapshot of the production at that time.

He also finished the four-volume series on the “History of the German Book Trade”, which Friedrich Kapp had started and which has long been considered a reference work for the history of the German book trade. The first volume had already appeared in 1886, Goldfriedrich then presented volumes 2 to 4 between 1908 and 1913.

family

Goldfriedrich was born the son of the Chief Finance Councilor Gustav Adolph Goldfriedrich and his wife Sophie. In 1900 he married Ruth Lamprecht, the daughter of superintendent Karl Hugo Lamprecht and Emilie Dreising. He had two children with her: Rolf (* 1902) and Hans Christian (* 1903).
