The green insects ( Odontopodisma ) are a genus of short- antennae terrors from the family of field locusts (Acrididae).
features
Females of the green insects reach a body length of 15 to 26 millimeters, males 13 to 18 millimeters. The basic color of both sexes is characteristically bright light green. A black longitudinal band runs from the rear edge of the eye to the base of the wing. The wings are only designed as conspicuously narrow wing stubs. The back knees are spotted black. The wing stubs, parts of the back knees and the abdominal appendages are usually bright pink. The long, pointed and pink-colored ovipositor is characteristic of females. The well-developed eardrum is partially covered by the wing stubs.
The individual species of the genus can almost only be distinguished on the basis of genital characteristics, for which a preparation of the animals is necessary.
distribution and habitat
The area of the green insect is in the east and south-east of Europe. They are typical inhabitants of shrubbery and are therefore to be found especially in light deciduous forests on leaves of low branches and fronds of ferns.
