Gracia Burnham

Gracia Burnham (born January 17, 1959 in Cairo , Illinois ) is an American Protestant missionary. She and her husband Martin served as missionaries in the Philippines for the New Tribes Mission for 17 years .

Life

Gracia and Martin graduated from Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri .

The couple belonged to a group that was kidnapped on May 27, 2001 by Islamist separatists from the Abu Sajaf . Most of the hostages were beheaded or released after paying ransom; the Burnhams, however, remained in captivity for over a year. The kidnappers demanded US $ 1 million for their release; after $ 330,000 was paid, the kidnappers refused to be released. During the attempt at liberation by the Philippine Army on June 7, 2002, Martin was shot three times in the chest and Gracia was injured in the right leg.

She returned to the United States with her three children and published two books about her experiences. She also established the Martin and Gracia Burnham Foundation. Her capture and being held hostage was featured on an episode of the TV series Banged Up Abroad in July 2008 . In addition, the kidnapping was filmed under the title Captive 2011 by Brillante Mendoza .
