Paul Count von Tiesenhausen , Russian Павел Иванович Тизенгаузен (Aug. 27 . Jul / 7. September  1774 greg. In Tallinn , † November 30 jul. / 12. December  1864 greg. ) Was a Baltic German nobleman and an officer in the Russian army.

Life

Paul von Tiesenhausen was the son of the chief steward Hans Heinrich von Tiesenhausen (1741–1815) and his wife Katharina Friederike von Stackelberg (1753–1826). His parents assigned him to military service as a child. He came into a cavalry regiment, in 1792 he received the rank of ensign, in 1798 the rank of captain and became adjutant to Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich, the future tsar.

In 1799 he took part in the Second Coalition War in Italy and Switzerland at the headquarters of General Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov . On October 15, 1800, he was appointed major general and commander of the Musketeer Regiment, but the next day he resigned from service "because of poor health". In 1801 Tsar Alexander I appointed him commander of Riga and in 1802 commander of Reval . In 1805 Tiesenhausen resigned from this office.

In 1815 he settled in his Sausti (Groß-Sauß) estate, was elected knighthood captain of the Estonian nobility and became a member of the commission for the liberation of Estonian farmers from forced labor .

On November 5, 1827, he received the title of a privy councilor and was appointed senator. He was in the service of General Alexander von Benckendorff .

In 1832 he served on the committee for the drafting of a joint charter of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia. In 1833 he was elected President of the Evangelical Lutheran General Consistory .

On December 5, 1843, he was appointed a full privy councilor. On April 21, 1845, he retired at his own request.

On October 8, 1803, Paul von Tiesenhausen married Countess Julia von der Pahlen (1782–1862), daughter of General Peter Ludwig von der Pahlen and Baroness Juliana von Schepping, and had three sons and four daughters:
