Graham Peacock

Graham Peacock (born July 26, 1945 in London ) is a representative of abstract painting in Canada .

Life

Peacock studied from 1962 to 1966 at Goldsmiths, University of London , then for a year at Leeds College of Art. In 1969 he went to Edmonton and followed a call to the University of Alberta , where he is professor at the Department of Art and Design to this day works for painting. He has also taught at numerous international art schools as a visiting professor. He is a founding member of the New New Painters artist group, founded in 1990 .

Under the influence of artists such as Jackson Pollock , Jules Olitski and Larry Poons , Peacock experimented with thick layers of acrylic paint poured on top of one another, which were poured onto strips of canvas about 10 meters long on the floor. Since the layer below is not yet fully hardened, material stresses and various cracks develop. With this process Peacock had developed the most important element of his unmistakable process painting, which finally helped him achieve his artistic breakthrough with the Polo series around 1982.

Like most of the above-mentioned artists, he only sets the boundaries of the picture after the completion of all painting procedures. Only then is the part marked as an autonomous image extracted from the large screen and stretched onto a frame. The irregular polygon, elliptical and teardrop formats of the 80s give way in the 90s to much more complex forms that result from the development of the composition from the center of the picture outwards. Overly aggressive forms that correspond only inadequately with the composition of the picture are reworked in the following years. From the mid-1990s onwards, the artist also used polyurethane foam, insulation tubes, collage elements such as glass beads, highly reflective fragments and holographic materials, as well as glitter . From the “Cut Out” series in 2000, painted canvas parts of a picture are cut out and replaced by new fragments that develop an illusionistic effect.

Ken Carpenter wrote in 2001 in "Art of America": “Peacock cut out these canvases in irregular, wavy shapes and mounted them on frames. By using insulating hoses, wire mesh mats for carpets and polyurethane filling, he carved out ridges and hills within the colored areas. The material quality of these works seems to bring his painting closer to sculpture. In a kind of striving for otherness, as Walter Pater put it, the power of one art could sometimes provide the form for another. But instead of sculptural, these images could be described as topographical. They are in line with Miro's claim to remain within pure painting and at the same time to go beyond it. "
