Pierre Enckell
Pierre Enckell (born September 27, 1937 in Helsinki , † July 7, 2011 in Paris ) was a Finnish journalist, Romance scholar , lexicologist and lexicographer of the French language who worked in France.
life and work
Enckell grew up speaking French, Finnish and Swedish and went to school in Stockholm, Paris and Lausanne . From 1954 to 1961 he went to sea, first as a cabin boy, and finally as "Lieutenant au long cours". From 1963 to 1972 he lived in Algiers , where he graduated from the University with a License de lettres and worked as a feature journalist. Then he went back to Paris and lived a period from the minimum wage to employment as a journalist and literary critic for the Nouvelles Littéraires (1978-1997) and the weekly magazine L'Événement du jeudi (1984-1997).
In his spare time, Enckell was a professional hobby lexicologist. In his life he collected 20,000 quotations with initial references to French words and wrote on 150,000 index cards. In an autobiographical text, he thanked Jean-Claude Zylberstein, Claude Pichois and Jean-Marie Borzeix for helping them get started in the literary business and Bernard Quemada for publishing the lexical materials in 9 volumes.
