Claude Pichois

Claude Pichois (born July 21, 1925 in Paris , † October 12, 2004 ) was a French Romance studies and literary scholar.

life and work

From 1956 to 1961 Pichois was Maître de conférence at the University of Aix-en-Provence and from 1961 to 1970, as successor to Georges Blin, Professor at the University of Basel . He completed his habilitation with the two thèses Philarète Chasles et la vie littéraire au temps du romantisme (2 vols., Paris 1965) and L'Image de Jean-Paul Richter dans les lettres françaises (Paris 1963) and was professor from 1970 to 1977 from Vanderbilt University in Nashville (from 1982 to 1998 director of the Center Baudelaire there). From 1977 to 1979 he taught in Namur ( Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix ) and founded the Center de recherches Gérard de Nerval with Jean Guillaume (1918–2001). In 1979 he succeeded René Etiemble at the Sorbonne University . Charles Baudelaire , Gérard de Nerval and Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette were the central subjects of his research. He became particularly well-known as the chief editor of the monumental history of French literature, which was oriented towards the sociology of literature, entitled Littérature française (16 vols., Paris 1968–1979).

Pichois received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Neuchâtel (1983), Dublin, Trinity College (1984) and Leuwen (1999).
