Jean Guillaume

Jean Guillaume (born October 28, 1918 in Fosses-la-Ville ; † February 9, 2001 in Namur ) was a Belgian Jesuit , Romance scholar, literary scholar, nerval specialist and author in the Walloon language .

life and work

Father Guillaume entered the Jesuit novitiate Arlon in 1937 (closed in 1967) and studied Classical and Romance philology and theology in Namur, Liège and Leuven. In 1951 he was ordained a priest. In 1954 he received his doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven with an essay sur la valeur exégétique du substantif dans les "Entrevisions" et "La chanson d'Ève" de [Charles] Van Lerberghe [1861–1907] (Brussels 1956). From 1955 he was professor of French literature at the Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix in Namur .

Due to the lack of a critical edition of the works of Gérard de Nerval , he founded the Gérard de Nerval research center with Claude Pichois in Namur in 1978 and published Nerval's collected works in 3 volumes in the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade from 1984 to 1993 . In addition, he wrote poetry in the Walloon language and was editor of Walloon authors.
