Francis Shi-Ming Wong is an American jazz and improvisation musician ( saxophone , also flute , clarinet , violin , percussion ), composer and music producer .

Wong has Chinese roots and has been playing in the jazz and improvisation scene of the Asian American Jazz Movement in the San Francisco Bay Area a . a. with Mark Izu , William Roper , Bobby Bradford , John Tchicai , James Newton , Joseph Jarman , Don Moye and Glenn Horiuchi . In 1987 he founded the Asian Improv Records label with Jon Jang . He also works with his own formations, such as Great Wall , the eight-person composers workshop AIRShop and the Trio Ming . In his playing, Wong merges jazz, traditional Japanese and Chinese music. His role models include John Coltrane , Sonny Rollins and David Murray . In the field of jazz, Wong participated in 66 recording sessions between 1983 and 2009. From 1992 to 1998 he was a fellow of the California Arts Council , 2000/01 from Meet the Composer . Wong has taught at San Francisco State University (1996–98) and the University of California, Santa Cruz (1996–2001).
